Apple-pear crumble is a simple baked fruit dessert with an oat topping that needs only one dish and a handful of pantry staples. Pears soften more than apples in the oven, so the filling ends up with two textures instead of one. Brown sugar and rolled oats give the topping a chewy, toasty crust. The topping can be doubled for those who prefer more crumble, and extra apples can replace the pears.

Instructions

Heat the oven to 375 °F. Rub the bottom of a large casserole dish with a little margarine so the fruit does not stick.

Prepare the filling by combining the apples, pears, and the optional pinches of sugar and cinnamon. Pour the mixture into the greased dish.

For the topping, mix the flour, brown sugar, margarine or butter, rolled oats, and a dash of salt until combined. Spread it in a layer over the fruit.

Bake uncovered in the middle of the oven for 35 to 40 minutes. It is done when the filling is bubbling and the top is lightly browned.

If you like a thicker crust, double the topping amount. You can also use more apples in place of the pears.
