Sweet Barbecue Sauce
This sweet barbecue sauce is built from pantry staples and comes together in one saucepan in about 15 minutes of simmering. Brown sugar and ketchup give it a sticky sweetness, while cider vinegar, mustard and Worcestershire sauce keep it sharp enough to balance. Celery seed adds a savory note you rarely find in bottled versions. Use half to bake chicken or pork chops, then pour the rest over at the table.
Instructions
Put the ketchup, cider vinegar, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, celery seed, margarine, black pepper, red pepper, salt and onion flakes in a saucepan. Add garlic powder or minced garlic to taste if you want it, then bring everything to a boil.
Turn the heat down and let the sauce simmer for 10 to 15 minutes. It is ready when it has thickened slightly.
Arrange chicken pieces or pork chops in a greased baking dish. Pour half of the sauce over the meat.
Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 30 to 40 minutes. Spoon the remaining sauce over the meat just before serving.
If you would rather not bake it with meat, keep the sauce in the refrigerator and use it as you would a bottled barbecue sauce.
Make it personal.
