Buttermilk ranch is an easy homemade dressing that tastes fresher and tangier than most bottled versions. Here the buttermilk and lemon juice supply the sourness, while mayonnaise and sour cream give it body, so it clings to lettuce and holds up as a dip. Garlic, oregano and onion powder do the seasoning, and nothing in it is sweet. Everything goes into one bowl and takes a few minutes to whisk together.

Instructions

Mince the garlic as finely as you can so it disperses through the dressing instead of turning up in sharp bites.

Put the buttermilk, mayonnaise and sour cream in a large bowl and whisk until no streaks of mayonnaise or sour cream remain.

Add the lemon juice, minced garlic, oregano, onion powder and black pepper. Whisk again until the dressing is smooth and the seasonings are evenly spread.

Taste it and adjust the pepper or lemon juice if you want it sharper. Spoon it over salad, spread it on a sandwich, or serve it in a bowl alongside raw vegetables for dipping.
