Deep Fried Pretzels

Deep fried pretzels turn a bag of shelf-stable snack into a hot, freshly seasoned appetizer in about two minutes. The trick is the brevity: store-bought pretzels are already baked, so they only need a 2 to 3 second dip in oil. Tossing them on a paper towel dusted with garlic salt, seasoned salt, or Italian seasoning gives you an easy way to vary the batch, and the oil can be reused.

Instructions

Pour the oil into a deep saucepan so it is only partly full, then set it over heat until it is hot.

While the oil heats, spread the seasoning over a paper towel and lay the towel on a plate. The paper towel soaks up excess moisture from the fried pretzels.

Using a spatula, lower a handful of pretzels into the hot oil. Leave them in for only 2 to 3 seconds, since they are already baked and need just a brief dip.

Lift the pretzels out and lay them on the seasoned paper towel so the seasoning clings and the surface dries. The same oil can be reused for further batches.
