Latte di Suocera (Mother-in-Law's Milk)
Latte di suocera, or mother-in-law's milk, is an Italian lemon cream liqueur made by steeping milk, sugar and grain alcohol with lemon zest and vanilla. Because it uses the zest of an organically grown lemon, the peel flavors the drink without any waxy residue. The jar does the work over eight days of daily shaking, followed by a month of rest. Serve it after dinner or pour it over vanilla ice cream.
Instructions
Put the sugar, milk, grain alcohol, lemon zest and split vanilla bean into a wide-mouthed jar. Screw the lid on tightly.
Shake the jar well, then set it in a cool, dark place.
Shake the jar once a day for 8 days. The milk will curdle as it sits, which is expected.
After the 8 days, filter the liquid to remove the solids and pour it into a clean bottle.
Stopper the bottle and keep it in a cool, dark place for a month before serving.
Make it personal.
