This mulling spice with anise is a dry blend of orange peel, cinnamon, allspice, cloves and star anise that you mix once and keep in a jar. Because every spice is left whole or broken, nothing turns to powder, which suits slow simmering in liquid. The star anise adds a faint licorice note that sets this version apart from plain cinnamon and clove blends. It also packs neatly into jars for gifts.

Instructions

Measure the dried orange peel, broken cinnamon sticks, whole allspice berries, whole cloves and broken star anise into a large bowl.

Stir everything together with a spoon or your hands until the different pieces are evenly distributed and no layer of one spice sits at the bottom.

Transfer the mix to a jar, close the lid tightly, and keep it stored in the closed jar until you need it.
