New World Affogato is a quick dessert of vanilla ice cream drowned in hot, sweetened coffee. This version adds a spoonful of brandy to the coffee and finishes with a dusting of cinnamon, which gives the classic Italian pairing a warmer, spiced edge. The contrast is the point: cold, creamy ice cream meets a hot, bitter pour. It needs one pan and five minutes, and it works as a small end to a meal.

Instructions

Put the scoop of vanilla ice cream in a coffee cup and keep it in the freezer while you make the coffee, so it stays firm.

Bring some water to a boil in a small pan. Stir in the coffee powder and the sugar until both have dissolved completely.

Stir the brandy into the hot coffee mixture.

Pour the coffee mixture over the ice cream in the cup. The ice cream will begin to melt at the edges and pool into the coffee.

Dust the top with cinnamon powder if you are using it, and serve right away, before the ice cream loses its shape.
