These bars turn a pantry short list into a layered cookie with a crisp crumb base, a chewy condensed milk center and a nutty chocolate top. The crust is just graham crackers and melted butter pressed into the pan, so there is no dough to chill or roll. Pecans and sliced almonds add crunch against the sweetness, and the batch cuts into about 30 pieces, which suits a bake sale or a party table.

Instructions

Heat the oven to 350°F. Melt the butter in a microwave-safe dish covered with a paper towel, on high for about 45 seconds, then take it out carefully and stir until no solid pieces remain.

Tip the graham cracker crumbs into a metal 13-by-9-inch baking pan. Pour the melted butter over them and stir and fold until every crumb is moist, then press the mixture firmly and evenly into the bottom of the pan to form a crust.

Pour the sweetened condensed milk over the crust and spread it out to the edges with the back of a spoon. Scatter the chocolate chips, pecans and almonds evenly over the top, and press them down gently with a fork.

Bake uncovered for 25 to 35 minutes, until the milk is bubbling slightly along the edges of the pan. Take the pan out of the oven and let it cool to room temperature.

Refrigerate the bars for 1 to 2 hours, until firm, then slice. Store them at room temperature, covered with foil.
