Ploughman's Lunch

A ploughman's lunch is a cold pub plate of cheese, bread, butter and pickle that takes five minutes to put together. The pleasure is in choosing well: a crumbly Lancashire or a sharp Stilton, a thick slice of nutty granary bread, and a chunky pickle with real bite. Despite the name, it is a fairly modern pub invention rather than a farmworker's meal, but it has become a British classic.

Instructions

Cut a thick slice from the loaf of granary bread and butter it, or leave the butter on the side so each bite can be dressed as you like.

Lay a few lettuce leaves on a large plate to make a base.

Set the cheese on the plate. If you are using two or three kinds, cut each into a generous piece so they can be told apart.

Spoon the pickle onto the plate beside the cheese and bread.

Add any of the optional extras you have: apple half, pickled onions, a cocktail pork pie or sausage rolls. The plate is ready to eat as soon as everything is on it, with no cooking involved.
