Sangría

Sangría is a Spanish red wine punch that turns a bottle of wine and whatever fruit is in the bowl into a pitcher for a crowd. Brandy and a little sugar round out the wine, while lemon juice keeps it bright. The fruit is part of the drink, so it improves the longer it soaks, up to a day in the fridge. Swap in other fruit or liqueurs freely, or use lemonade for a sweeter pitcher.

Instructions

Pour the red wine into a container large enough to hold all the ingredients with room to stir.

Juice the lemons and add the juice to the wine. Cut the orange and the remaining fruit into segments, pieces and slices, and add the orange, the peaches, the apple and the banana to the container.

Add the sugar and the brandy, then stir well with a wooden spoon until the sugar has dissolved. Add the cinnamon stick if you are using it.

Cover and refrigerate for at least an hour so the fruit can soak up the wine. For a deeper flavor you can leave it for up to 24 hours, adding the banana slices only half an hour to an hour before serving so they stay firm.

Add ice cubes and let the sangría stand for 10 minutes. Serve in tall glasses with some of the fruit in each, and keep a spoon handy for eating the fruit at the end.
