Sloppy Joes
Sloppy joes are loose-meat sandwiches with roots in the cooking of the Midwestern United States, and this version needs only one skillet and a few pantry bottles. Ketchup and barbecue sauce supply the sweetness and tang, while garlic and chili powder add warmth. Draining the beef before adding the sauce keeps the filling thick rather than watery, so it stays on the toasted bun.
Instructions
Put the ground beef in a skillet over medium heat. If you are using the onion and green pepper, add them now and cook, breaking up the meat, until the beef is browned all the way through.
Tip the mixture into a colander or carefully pour off the liquid from the pan. Return the drained meat to the skillet.
Keep the heat at medium and stir in the ketchup, barbecue sauce, garlic powder and chili powder. The order does not matter, just mix until the sauce is evenly combined with the meat.
Let the mixture simmer for 20 minutes, stirring now and then, until it has thickened and clings to the meat.
Toast the sliced hamburger buns and spoon the meat over them to serve.
