Bachelor Fish Stew
Bachelor Fish Stew is a three-tin supper that goes from cupboard to bowl in about 20 minutes. Mackerel in tomato sauce, beans and chopped tomatoes are all cooked already, so the saucepan only has to heat them and let the curry powder spread through. The oily fish adds richness, and the beans make it filling. Swap in sardines or a different bean, or stir in broccoli or an egg.
Instructions
Open all the tins and drain the liquid from the beans.
Tip the beans, tomatoes, mackerel with its tomato sauce, curry powder, salt and pepper into a saucepan. Add anything else you fancy at this point.
Bring the pan to the boil, then cover it and turn the heat down to a simmer. Stir now and then until the stew is hot enough to eat, which takes 5 to 10 minutes.
If you have added raw extras such as an egg, vegetables chopped to about 1 inch or small broccoli florets, keep simmering until they are cooked through. About 20 minutes should do it.
