Garlic Bread

3 ingredients Cuisine: Page updated October 2026

This garlic bread uses only three ingredients and a bowl of softened butter. Mashing fresh minced garlic into the butter with a fork spreads it evenly, so every bite carries the same sharp, savory flavor. Cutting slits partway through the loaf lets the butter sink deep into the crumb, and baking the halves wrapped in foil keeps the crust from drying out. Add extra cloves if you like a stronger garlic taste.

Instructions

Set an oven rack to the middle position and preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

Use a bread knife to cut the loaf in half lengthwise. Then cut diagonal slits into each half, angled toward the bottom, taking care not to slice all the way through.

Peel the garlic cloves and mince them finely with a garlic crusher or a chef's knife.

Put the butter in a medium bowl and soften it in the microwave. The time depends on your microwave, so check it often and stop once it is soft enough to mash.

Mash the minced garlic into the softened butter with a fork, stirring until the mixture is even.

Spread the garlic butter over both halves of the bread with a butter knife, working it into the diagonal slits as well.

Wrap each half in foil and set them on the middle rack. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes.

Take the bread out of the oven, unwrap the foil, and serve while still warm.
