Smörgåstårta (Sandwich Layer-Cake)

Smörgåstårta is a Swedish party centerpiece that looks like a cake but is built from layers of white bread and a creamy shrimp filling. Cottage cheese lightens the mayonnaise, and chopped shrimp and egg give each slice a savory, cool richness. It is served cold, so you can assemble it ahead of the party. Cut it into small squares and it works as an appetizer too.
Instructions
Boil the eggs until hard and peel them. Peel the shrimp, set aside about a third for garnish, and chop the rest for the filling.
Stir 1 dl of the mayonnaise together with the 1 dl sour cream in a small bowl and chill it. In a separate bowl, mix the remaining mayonnaise with the cottage cheese and the chopped shrimp to make the filling, and season it with salt and pepper.
Cut the bread lengthwise into eight slices about 1 cm thick, and throw away the top and bottom slices. Lay two slices side by side on a cutting board and spread them with one third of the filling.
Cover with two more slices, spread with half of the remaining filling, and repeat for the final layer. You should end up with four layers of bread and three layers of filling between them.
Trim the edges with a sharp knife if they are uneven. Spread the chilled mayonnaise and sour cream mixture thinly and evenly over the top and sides.
Press chopped parsley or dill onto the sides. Decorate the top with the reserved shrimp, sliced eggs, and dill sprigs or lemon slices, then serve cold, whole or cut into pieces.
