Sweet Beef

Sweet Beef is a slow cooker dish of seared beef chunks in a sticky, tangy chili sauce. The sauce gets its character from a handful of pantry staples: brown sugar for sweetness, vinegar and dry mustard for bite, and bacon drippings for a smoky start when browning the meat. Searing the beef first gives the finished dish deeper flavor than simply dumping everything in. It pairs well with mashed potatoes, which soak up the sauce.
Instructions
Heat the bacon drippings or vegetable oil in a skillet over high heat. Add the beef chunks and brown them on all sides, but do not cook them through. Move the meat to the slow cooker.
Melt the butter in a skillet. The source also mentions frying onions until they turn transparent, but no onion appears in the ingredient list, so add them only if you choose to, and cook them until see-through.
Add the vinegar, brown sugar, dry mustard, salt, water, chili sauce and the optional dash of tobacco to the skillet. Simmer the sauce for 10 minutes.
Pour the sauce over the beef in the slow cooker and stir so every piece is coated.
Cook on low for 2½ to 3½ hours. Serve with mashed potatoes and honey carrots.
