Apple Brown Betty
Apple brown betty is a baked American dessert of sliced apples layered through buttery bread crumbs. The crumbs are sautéed in butter first, so they soak up cinnamon and apple juice as the dish bakes and turn soft and spoonable rather than crisp. The apples go in unpeeled, which saves time and keeps some texture. It needs only six pantry staples, and it works in a skillet, a casserole or a Dutch oven.
Instructions
Heat the oven to 375°F.
Melt the butter in a skillet and stir in the bread crumbs. Cook them in the butter, stirring, until they are coated and sautéed.
Add the sliced apples, cinnamon, sugar and water to the skillet and stir everything together.
If your skillet can go in the oven, cover it and use it for baking. If it cannot, move the mixture to a greased casserole dish and cover that instead.
Bake covered for 30 to 40 minutes, until the apples are tender when pierced.
Check the dish partway through. If the mixture looks dry, stir in another ¼ cup of water, since apples differ in how much moisture they hold.
Serve with milk or whipped cream. If you cook it in a Dutch oven, preheat the oven with 15 charcoal briquettes, one third underneath and two thirds on the lid.
Make it personal.
