Cuban Sandwich
The Cuban sandwich stacks roast pork and ham with Swiss cheese, pickle and mustard inside a bread roll. The pairing of pernil with sliced ham gives it both a rich, savory depth and a salty edge, while the pickle and mustard cut through the fat. This version adds tomato, lettuce, onion and mayonnaise, and offers chorizo as an optional extra. It is easy to assemble, and toasting is up to you.
Instructions
Split the bread roll lengthwise so the two halves open like a book. Spread yellow mustard on one cut side and mayonnaise on the other.
Lay the ham and the pernil over the bottom half, then add the slices of Swiss cheese. If you are using chorizo, put it on at this stage too.
Add the dill pickle, sliced tomatoes and sliced onions, then top with fresh lettuce. Close the roll and press down gently so the filling holds together.
Serve the sandwich as it is, or toast it until the bread is crisp and the cheese has softened. Use fresh lettuce and onions either way, since they provide the crunch against the rich meats.
