The Fool's Gold Loaf is a whole French loaf, buttered and baked until browned, then hollowed out and packed with peanut butter, grape jelly and crisp bacon. It is famously linked to Elvis Presley. The baked, margarine-brushed crust holds up to the heavy filling, and the salty bacon cuts through the sweet jelly and rich peanut butter. It serves eight to ten, so it suits a crowd with a sense of humor.

Instructions

Heat the oven to 350°F (180°C). Spread the margarine generously over every side of the loaf, then set it on a baking sheet in the oven.

While the bread bakes, fry the bacon in a little oil until crisp. Drain it well on paper towels.

Take the loaf out after about 15 minutes, when it is evenly browned.

Slice the loaf lengthwise and hollow out the inside, leaving as much bread along the walls as you like.

Spread a thick layer of peanut butter into the cavity, then add a thick layer of grape jelly on top. Be generous with both.

Lay the bacon slices inside the cavity, or if you prefer, layer bacon pieces between the peanut butter and the jelly. Close the loaf, slice it and serve.
